Autumn brings a different kind of beauty to Lake Kawaguchiko. Red and golden leaves brighten the lakeshore, while views of Mt. Fuji add a spectacular backdrop on clear days.
Whether you want to photograph autumn scenery, explore the Momiji Corridor or enjoy the Kawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival, leave time to discover the area at your own pace.
Here is a guide to enjoying Kawaguchiko’s autumn colors by rental bike.
Around the Momiji Corridor, leaves generally begin changing color in late October, with peak colors often appearing in early to mid-November. Fallen leaves can create beautiful carpets of color later in November.
The timing changes each year depending on the weather. Festival dates do not guarantee peak foliage, so check current autumn color reports before your visit.
The Fujikawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival, also known as the Momiji Festival, is one of the highlights of autumn around Lake Kawaguchiko.
The 2026 festival is scheduled for November 7–29. The event takes place around the Momiji Corridor on the northern shore, with evening illumination beginning at sunset.
Food stalls and craft stands add to the seasonal atmosphere. Take a walk beneath the colorful maple trees, browse the stalls and enjoy a break between sightseeing stops.
Check the official festival information before visiting for the latest schedule and illumination hours.
The Momiji Corridor, or Momiji Kairo, is a well-known autumn attraction in Kawaguchiko. Maple trees line the Nashikawa stream, creating a colorful setting for a leisurely walk.
Visit during the day to appreciate the leaves in natural light, or return after sunset to enjoy the illuminated trees. Later in the season, fallen leaves add another layer of color to the scene.
If you arrive by bicycle, park in a designated area and explore on foot. The corridor and festival grounds can become crowded, so allow plenty of time for your visit.
The Momiji Tunnel is a separate autumn spot along the northern lakeshore. Here, roadside maple branches form a canopy over the road when their leaves change color.
It can be an additional stop for visitors planning a longer lakeside ride.
Remember that this is a road used by traffic. Enjoy the scenery without stopping in the roadway, and only take photos from a safe place.
Oishi Park offers views of Mt. Fuji across Lake Kawaguchiko, with seasonal plants adding interest to the waterfront. Its autumn kochia brings a different kind of color from the maple trees, although their peak seasons may not coincide.
After a walk, visit the neighboring Fuji Oishi Hanaterasu for a café break or something to eat. Drinks, sweets and food options make it a pleasant place to rest during your autumn sightseeing trip.
For a relaxed daytime outing, consider this route:
Kawaguchiko Station area → Kawaguchiko Ohashi Bridge → Momiji Corridor → Oishi Park → Return
Spend time walking through the Momiji Corridor, then continue toward Oishi Park for lake views and a café break.
For a longer outing, consider adding the Momiji Tunnel beyond Oishi Park before returning. Choose your route according to your riding experience, the weather and your bike return time.
If you want to see the festival illumination, plan your evening visit separately from your daytime ride or confirm a rental arrangement that allows a later return.
Bring an extra layer, especially if you plan to stay until evening. Temperatures can feel much cooler after sunset.
Allow additional time around the festival area, where roads and walking paths may be busy. Follow local signs, keep access points clear and walk your bike through crowded areas.
Wet leaves can make surfaces slippery. Ride slowly, stop safely before taking photos and leave enough time to return your bike without rushing.
